Review & Giveaway: Maple Leaf Top Dogs

It's summer and there's lots of fun to be had. The kids want to ride their bikes and play at the park. Mom wants to putter in her garden. Dad has a ball game to get to. And, if you're lucky, there's neighbours out and about ready for a chat and a shared laugh. So who wants to spend a lot of time in the kitchen? Or even at the table?

For my family, the BBQ gets way more use in the summer than does the stove. It's more fun to cook outside, plus there's less mess and Mom & Dad can watch the kids play in the yard. And what's one of the quickest things both to cook and to eat? The classic hot dog!

I recently had the opportunity to review Maple Leaf's Top Dogs with my family. Seeing as we're big hot dog fans anyway, this was a great fit. We tried the Original Top Dogs as well as the Original in BBQ size. The Original Top Dogs are a classic hot dog - a mix of chicken, pork and beef  - and the perfect size for kids. The new BBQ size is the same wiener, but bigger and heartier for the bigger appetite. Both have a great hot dog taste, with nice juiciness.

When I went to write this post I realised that we were so anxious to get down to eating, I forgot to take any pictures of the finished product. So all I have is the "before" shot for you. Ah well.

We rounded out our quick meal with some cherry tomatoes and sliced cucumber from the garden, plus a handful of pretzels. Dinner was on the table in about 10 minutes! This is really a great casual and speedy meal for a summer evening. Each family member can dress their dog in the way they want. Hubs likes to add chili and cheese to his. Little Boo likes ketchup & cheese. The Teen adds mustard. And I like a bit of whatever's around. Ketchup, mustard and hot peppers is a good combo.

Maple Leaf Top Dogs are available in 6 delicious varieties, including 100% Angus Beef, singles, and reduced salt.  I especially like to have a package of the singles on hand. Since they are individually wrapped, it is easy to grab one at a time to supplement a meal for a picky eater, and the rest of the package stays fresh. For a while, these were Little Boo's main source of protein, sliced on his plate with some ketchup for dipping. Since Maple Leaf makes these dogs with only the best ingredients, I feel confident feeding them to my guys.

These are available in the meat section of supermarkets across Canada. Would you like to try them for yourself?
