Travel Fringe Benefits

When I was a kid, hanging out at the mall with my friends, I could often be seen treating myself to nice cold Tab. Not because it was a diet drink, but because I loved the taste. I just preferred it to other soft drinks. Something about that saccharin I guess.

Look at that pretty pink can

I miss Tab in a big way.

If you aren't familiar with Tab, it is the first diet pop made by Coca-Cola. They started production in 1963. It was a pretty popular drink until the advent of Diet Coke in 1982, and now its availability is pretty limited. It's been gone from Canada for YEARS. According to the Coca-Cola website, "the brand still has fiercely loyal fans who have been known to travel hundreds of miles to find their favorite drink." True story. I just went to Florida to get some.

Well, ok, maybe I went to Florida for a family vacation at Disney. But hitting a supermarket to pick up a case of Tab was a big priority. It always is when I cross the border into the States. In my experience, it's not available in all states, and word has it it's more common in the south. I haven't found it in Buffalo unfortunately.

I am mildly obsessed.

I also have a pretty big love on for Gardetto's Original Recipe snack mix. The rye chips in this are amazing. I ate a lot of it while I was in grad school in Indiana. We had snack sized bags in the vending machines at school, and I might have been known to have them for my lunch, along with a caffeinated(!) Mountain Dew. (Tab wasn't popular enough for the vending machines, though I could find it in two-litre bottles at one supermarket in my town.)  Gardetto's was a family bakery business, founded in 1931. They expanded over time and sold the business to General Mills in 1999. Still not available anywhere in Canada I have found.

My idea of snack heaven.

For me, every trip to the States requires a trip to a supermarket to search for these two items. Other friends I know go for the super-sweet cereals or the huge variety of flavoured yogourts. It's pretty amazing how different food and beverage products are in our two neighbouring countries. Medications too, but that's a different story. I used to stock up on Smarties and Gravol before heading off to school each August!

How about you? Do you have special treats or favourite foods or drinks that you can't easily get where you live? Is there an item you will travel the world for? Or that you have friends ship to you from far away? Let me know in the comments below!! I'd love to hear about it :-)
