Keep in touch for less - GL2GO

One of my big struggles, as you all know, is living so far from my family. I really miss them all, but especially my Mom. Getting my parents on Facebook and email has certainly been a help, but I still want to have a real conversation too. I do phone home every weekend for some catching up time, but with lessons and outings and  birthday parties, and that nasty need to buy groceries, it can be hard to find time. Add in a time difference and it becomes even more difficult. Sometimes the only time I can find to call is when I'm driving between commitments, and that can get pretty expensive with cellphone long distance rates.*

But I now have a new tool in my arsenal. GL2GO is a new, free, smart phone app which lets consumers take control of their long distance bills, with a rate of less than 2 cents a minute for calls within Canada and the US!  That's even cheaper than my really quite impressive home phone long distance plan.

High Liner Foods has partnered with GL2GO for a limited time offer. When you purchase specially-marked packages of High Liner products through February 2012, you will find a code good for 40 free long distance minutes, so you can try this app out for yourself, risk-free.  You can combine up to 5 codes, from 5 High Liner packages, to get up to 200 free minutes of long distance calling!  With potentially over 3 hours of long distance calling, that adds up to a lot of savings, while adding healthy fish to your diet.

I've been using the app for a couple of weeks now, and it is really straightforward. When you want to make a call you just open the app and can either dial with the keypad or access and select from your contacts. If you are on a calling plan with free incoming minutes, you can opt for a special "call-back" feature. You can set this as your default calling option in your settings, and then when you call out, your long distance minutes won't be charged to your outgoing minutes tally.

I haven't noticed any difference in call quality when using this app. Very clear and no static or anything. I've had no problems with dropped calls. The app also tells you how many minutes you have in your account at the beginning of each call, which is convenient so you don't get cut off.

Additional credits can be added to your GL2GO account through the "Recharge" tab on their website. Visa, MasterCard, and PayPal are accepted. You can even set up an auto-reload so that your account will be replenished once you reach a pre-defined minimum amount. Never run out of minutes again!

The GL2GO app is currently available for iPhone and Blackberry, with Android on the way. All minutes earned through the High Liner promotion must be used by January 31, 2013.

My experience is that this app is a great money-saving tool that helps me to balance my busy schedule and stay connected with my family while on the go. Do you think you'd like to give it a try?  Three Raising My Boys readers will receive one coupon each for a free High Liner product, to allow you to test out this app with a free 40 minutes code. This contest is open to Canadian residents only. Entry is through the Rafflecopter widget below.

*Don't worry - I have a built-in, voice-activated bluetooth thingy that operates my phone through the stereo system. It's all very safe, sensible, and legal.

Disclosure: I received complimentary GL2GO minutes so that I could try out this app. The opinions in this post are my own.
