Rethinking an old fave - Dempster's New Bagel Recipe (review)

Most mornings I find that I don't have the time to sit down to a sensible breakfast before I race out the door . So, instead, I often grab a healthy, hand-held meal to go. And more often than not, this takes the form of a toasted bagel. Sometimes with cream cheese, sometimes with veggies, sometimes with a fried egg, or maybe just butter if I'm really running late. I love my bagels. But not the hard, doughy ones.Did you know that February 9 was National Bagel Day? I think I tweeted it three or four times :) I celebrated that morning with a toasted cinnamon raisin & cream cheese, I believe.  Meanwhile,  Dempster’s celebrated the occasion with the launch of their new bagel formulation.

From Dempster's: "The new recipe for Dempster’s Bagels ensures every bagel toasts up to be crispy on the outside yet stays soft and fluffy on the inside. Made fresh daily in bakeries across Canada, Dempster’s Bagels use a special recipe and authentic baking process. The improved recipe includes premium Canadian ingredients such as real cinnamon and spice, dried blueberries, fried onions and pumpkin seeds. The result? A bagel that’s perfect for toasting and topping."

My simple fave - lettuce, tomato, mayo
on toasted sesame seed
I have to say that I agree with their description. These bagels toast up just the way I like them. You can see in my picture how the outside is crisping enough to have some cracks. The inside is quite light and soft, not dense and "chewy." I tried out both the sesame seed and cinnamon raisin and both had great flavour and texture. I think I'd like to give the blueberry ones a chance next. That could be a favourite for Little Boo. You can check out the full bagel line here.

Would you like to try these for yourself? Dempsters is offering a $1 off coupon on their Facebook page. If you want some foodie inspiration to go with that coupon, you can try out some special bagel recipes created by celebrity chef and Dempster's Brand Ambassador, Bob Blumer. I'm thinking of trying the "Dill-icious" first.

And while you're over on Facebook, Dempster's is also running a "Bagel-y" contest there. You can enter to win 1 of 20 Kitchenaid bagel toasters, plus a year's supply of Dempster's bagels. Check it out! And good luck!
