Did you say Bacon Jam??
I have been seeing a steep rise in the variety of bacon products lately. And I totally support this trend. I love bacon. Even during the 12 years or so that I was primarily a vegetarian, I could not give up my occasional treat of amazing, crispy bacon goodness.
So I was happy to test out Skillet Bacon Spread from Skillet Street Food in Seattle. I received a 2 ounce sample to try out, and have shared it with my boys.
Skillet Bacon Spread, or "Bacon Jam," is basically bacon rendered down with onions, brown sugar, and seasonings. It has a consistency something like a pate, and is very spreadable.
I have to say that it is not particularly appealing to look at. Little Boo refused to even sample it, based on looks. But he's 6. And this is about flavour, not presentation. The Teen and Hubs both tried it on a water cracker, and they gave it a thumbs up. Hubs said he was pleasantly surprised and would definitely have it again. He did comment that it reminded him of pate, of which he is a fan.
I used it in place of mayo on a turkey sandwich. Yum! Bacon Jam has an interesting smoky but sweet flavour. It added a nice dimension to the sandwich and I'd definitely consider it for a repeat performance.
So, if you are a fan of smoky bacon, this is worth a try. As a condiment on sandwiches or burgers, or a spread for appetizers, it is definitely an interesting new twist.
