Ah-Choo! In our house, seasonal and other environmental allergies are a fact of life. The Teen is allergic to mold and dust mites. Little Boo and I both have seasonal allergies; mine are both spring and fall, and his seem to be fall only so far. What's more fun? I have recently had to start seeing a respirologist, and he has me slated for an asthma test in a couple of weeks. Oi!
The sneezing and snotting is not a lot of fun. So, when I was approached to check out a new air purifier from Honeywell, I jumped at the chance.
At this time of year we are bringing in lots of fall pollen on our clothes, shoes and pets. Plus, as the humidity of summer passes, we tend to open our windows more to "air out" our homes. Problem is, if the pollen counts are high, open windows can do more harm than good for allergy sufferers.
Honeywell sent over their True HEPA Allergen Remover Air Purifier (HPA-151). This unit is a nice looking, sleek tower, in basic black. With its HEPA filter, it captures 99.97% of microscopic airborne allergens as small as .3 microns (that’s smaller than the diameter of a single strand of hair!) from the air that passes through. So, it can grab the pollen and ragweed you are tracking in on your clothes and shoes. Better yet, it’s also ENERGY STAR® rated so running it 24/7 isn't a load on your energy bills.
I was initially worried about the possibility this unit would be too noisy. But we really haven't found that. There are three power levels from which to choose, and the low and middle I barely notice at all. There is maybe some white noise in the background with the middle setting. The highest setting is perhaps a little loud in our small living room, but I could run it periodically to get a headstart on a big cleaning, or if the unit were in a larger space.
The HEPA filters in this unit are permanent and need only be vacuumed periodically to clear out the collected "stuff." Love that they don't need to be replaced! There is also a pre-filter that traps larger particles and absorbs odours. This filter is recommended to be replaced every three months or so of 24/7 use, as filtration performance will be reduced as it collects particles. I particularly like that the unit has two electronic filter checks, and the lights will come on when the filters need attention - no need to fuss about when you last had a peek in the back!
Overall, I am very pleased with this unit. It is hard for me to quantify exactly how much cleaner my air is, although I do think the house smells fresher when you walk in, and I've noticed fewer allergy symptoms in my boys this year than last. I've been sick myself, so it's hard to say, but I feel my breathing in the house is easier since this air purifier has been running.
