The calendar is telling me it's Spring now. The view out my window is decidedly not. As I write this, I am looking out on a backyard covered in snow, with freezing rain falling down atop it all for a nice crusty finish. Ugh. But we did have some nice days last week. I even had all my windows open on a couple of occasions to air out the house. Don't you love that? The first day you see the spring sunshine and feel the warmer air, and you know it's time to throw open your windows and start dreaming of tropical drinks on your deck?
Of course, this also makes me think of Spring cleaning. And with the April (ice) showers tracking so much mud across my floors, there's a lot of regular cleaning to do as well. My go-to tools for my floors? Swiffer products all the way.
Swiffer products first hit the market in 1999, and I was quick to jump on the Swiffer Sweeper bandwagon. I had two cats and hard surface floors throughout my house. The cloths attracted and trapped all that cat fur and dander so well and made my cleaning so much easier. Love! Unlike a broom and dustpan, which tend to just push light bits like pet fur around, the cloths grab them and keep them from flying away. Since that time Swiffer has even improved the dry cloths and added wet cloths to the line. The wet and dry cloths attach quickly to the sweeper and you simply throw them out once they become soiled.
After a trip home to Newfoundland last summer, I have moved on up to the Swiffer SweeperVac. My sister-in-law swears by hers for picking up dog hair and the crumbs and dirt my nephews trail behind them. This little wonder combines the attraction of the Swiffer Sweeper cloth with the sucking power of a vacuum to pick up larger particles. The Sweeper Vac runs on a rechargeable battery - just plug it in, charge it up, and you're ready to go. There are no vacuum bags, just a dirt bin and filter that you empty as needed. Super easy. I run it over the floors in a few quick minutes, and I'm done.
For mopping, I rely on my Swiffer WetJet. My mom sold me on this now essential tool. It makes mopping the floors so quick and easy! The WetJet is battery-operated, and you load it with a bottle of its own specially formulated floor-cleaning solution (multipurpose or for wood floors), then pop on a cleaning pad. Rather than fill a bucket and drag it around, you just press a button to spray out the cleaning solution onto your floor, then mop up the dirt with the disposable pad. These cleaning pads attract and hold the dirt so it doesn't redistribute onto the floor. When you're done cleaning, simply dispose of the dirty pad - no germy mop heads lying around. Plus, I like that my floor dries more quickly than when using a mop and bucket - pretty important with a house full of boys who don't seem to notice when I'm cleaning.
Starting to see why I'm a P&G Mom? My house has been maintained by their products for years. Swiffer Dusters, Febreze Fabric Refresher, Mr. Clean Magic Eraser, Mr. Clean Liquid, and so on. In the spirit of spring cleaning, I'll share with you some cleaning tips passed along by P&G:
- Upholstery, carpets & curtains: Mist these hard to wash areas with NEW Febreze Fabric Refresher with Gain to eliminate unwanted odours and leave a fresh scent.
- Closet clutter: Tuck away your winter wear in organized storage bins to make room for your spring and summer wardrobe. To keep your winter wear smelling fresh, add Gain Fireworks Original Scent Booster to your laundry load, before tucking items away. You can also use a Febreze Fabric Refresher to refresh items being pulled out of storage.
- Baseboard & blinds: These areas trap dust and dirt, and can often be neglected. To tackle these tricky areas, run the Swiffer Duster along the surface.
- Tough to clean places: Mr. Clean Magic Eraser is a great tool for cleaning away the grime you come across when uncovering those rarely seen spaces and hard to reach places. Mr. Clean Magic Eraser removes scuffs, crayon marks and finger prints from walls too! Mr. Clean has plenty of tips to share, check out www.mrclean.ca for details.
And here's a quick little "Did You Know?" Swiffer cloths are actually made right here in Ontario, at a plant in Brockville. Pretty cool, hey?
