Upcycle Your Cereal with General Mills #HNCHeartyOatCrunch

Before we get to the cereal, I want to tell you about my most recent upcycling adventure.

You see, one of the things about garage sales is you need to keep an open mind and sometimes use your imagination in order to picture what something might become. An old, beaten up item can often be transformed into something beautiful and new.  Whether it's re-purposing beautiful vintage tea cups into bud vases or refinishing an old end table and adding a shelf  to create a new nightstand, there's lots that can be done. Even when the original piece, whether from a garage sale or handed down through your family, is beautiful on its own, you may not have a use for it as it is, but a few simple modifications can give it new life. Think creating a baby quilt from your wedding dress, or sewing pillow slips from handed down silk scarves. There are many ways an older item can be tweaked to allow for many more years of enjoyment. (As an added bonus - this keeps items out of landfills!)

One of my fave finds from yesterday's neighbourhood garage sale was an old wheeled trolley or bar stand. I am sure it was awesome in its day (manufactured 1958, btw), but in 2013 it pretty much had no redeeming features. All metal with a wood effect finish, lots of rust, sticky wheels. But it was sturdy and I needed wanted something to hold my outdoor gear on my back deck. I got this little gem for the grand sum of $2. How could I say no?? So I brought it home and gave it a new finish, spray painted key lime green all over. Now it shines and all the rust is covered. What do you think?

It looks great on my deck and totally makes me smile. I'll post the DIY instructions later this week.

But it's not just garage sale finds that can benefit from a little pick-me-up. The folks over at General Mills have been working on a number of new products, including a re-vamp of an old favourite. The brand-new Honey Nut Cheerios Hearty Oat Crunch combines the classic Honey Nut Cheerios with crispy oat flakes and delicious nut clusters.  It will be available in stores starting June 24.  I was lucky enough to receive an advance box to try, and I can honestly say that I love it! It does have a satisfying crunch, and I like that there are different textures in the bowl. I'm eating some dry as a snack while I write this.

Would you like to try a box of this new cereal? For free? As a Raising My Boys reader, you can fill out this form to request your own free box of Honey Nut Cheerios Hearty Oat Crunch. I've been allotted 25 boxes to give away, so this form will only be available to the first 25 readers to respond. (Follow the link and complete the form to respond to this offer.)

After 25 readers have requested their free box, the form will close, but you still have a chance to receive a coupon by visiting the Life Made Delicious Facebook page starting June 3rd, through the 25th (while supplies last).

The launch of Honey Nut Cheerios Hearty Oat Crunch will actually see the launch of  7 additional brand-new products from General Mills. During the June 3-25 period, there will therefore be two coupons available on their Facebook page. Note that the coupons are redeemable only on one of two specific dates:

- July 16th coupon will be redeemable for either 1 box of Honey Nut Cheerios Hearty Oat Crunch OR 1 box of Fibre 1 Almond & Cluster Delight

- July 23rd coupon will be redeemable for Nature Valley, Fibre 1 bars, Golden Grahams OR Cinnamon Toast Crunch treats!

More information will be available on General Mills’ Life Made Delicious page.

Enjoy your cereal!! And happy up-cycling!
