Farmers Feed Cities - Bringing the Farm to The CNE
Last week I talked about a number of CNE offerings that are perfect for the little ones. I didn't talk about the Farm Building though, only because we didn't make it there on our first visit this year. It's been a big hit with Little Boo every since he was a toddler. The Farm is filled with live farm animals, demonstrations and talks, mini bee hives from the honey producers, butter sculptures, and lots of activities for the kids.
We visited this year as guests of Farmers Feed Cities, a group you know I support and have worked with in the past. They have folks available at their booth to talk about farming and food production in Ontario, to answer questions, and to promote buying and eating local. They also have stickers, tatoos and decals for the kids, as well as colouring pages and hand-outs on farm facts. We grabbed a colouring sheet with a farm word search, as LB is very into word searches these days.
Did you know that 1 Ontario farm can produce food enough for 120 people, and that 98% of Ontario farms are family owned? Farming is actually Ontario's second largest industry. Pretty cool, right?
Farmers Feed Cities is also hosting a Farm Quest for the kids visiting the CNE Farm. It's a kind of scavenger hunt, with a series of 8 questions about the animals. Kids need to find the answers to at least 4 of the questions by speaking with the farmers at their exhibits and then can drop their ballot with the answers in the ballot box for a chance to win a Day on the Farm. Be sure to drop by the FFC booth on your way into the Farm so you can pick up the questions! This is a great way to get the kids engaged and learning about the farms and the animals that keep us fed and healthy.
And, while you're there you can enter the #HugAFarmer Photo Contest as well - take your picture hugging a farmer cut-out, then share it to Twitter or Facebook for a chance at a daily FFC prize pack and 2 passes to the 2014 CNE. All entries will be entered into a final draw for the grand prize of a Day on the Farm, with an overnight stay and the opportunity to travel around Niagara and be a farmer for a day. See the booth for full details!
