Invest In Girls and Change the World: Because I Am A Girl
I may be a mom to boys, but I am myself girl. And I think we girls are pretty awesome. We are strong and smart, loving and giving. We bring life into the world and then nurture it to maturity and beyond. We work hard and can do amazing things. But we have some special challenges as well, that are just our own.
We have come a long way towards real equality in the developed world, but that's not the case everywhere.
According to UNESCO's Institute for Statistics, approximately 65 million girls worldwide do not attend primary or secondary school. And did you know that 70% of the one billion people in the world living in extreme poverty are women and girls, and girls are three times more likely than boys to be malnourished?
These numbers point to the special struggles of girls and women in the poorer parts of the world. Plan Canada, through their Because I Am A Girl program, hopes to raise awareness and funds to support education and projects that will support the development of girls around the world. When girls and women are healthy and educated, they have the opportunity to better contribute to society and the economy, and that benefits everyone.
