Antonella's Pasta Sauce - Gluten-free and Delicious!

"Mommy, what's for dinner?" Hmm. I dunno. I do try to be on top of things and plan out meals for the week, but some days I'm too tired or too busy to be creative. Some days there just isn't time to craft a full, made from scratch meal in time for dinner. On those days I turn to tried and true favourites, made with ready-to-serve components. But it's still important that they be healthy options.

I'm happy to have a new tool to add to my pantry of quick meal solutions - Antonella's ready-to-serve pasta sauces, made right here in Canada by Lassonde Specialties out of Montreal. These are available in four flavours - Alfredo, Cheddar, Tomato-Basil, and Roasted Garlic - and are preservative- and gluten-free, making them suitable for a variety of diets. Since my boys all love pasta, and it is so easy and quick to prepare, we do eat a lot of it, and I'm always looking for new ways to serve it.

We received two flavours to try, the Cheddar and Roasted Garlic. Boo and I had the Cheddar that very day I opened the review package. We were looking for something quick and filling before running out to karate, and this fit the bill. I didn't get fancy, just warmed up the sauce and poured it over some linguine. Boo loved it, and practically licked the bowl. It's a very kid-friendly flavour. I enjoyed it as well, but was expecting it to be a bit thicker consistency. I'd like to try it in a baked pasta dish to see how it thickens up.  Maybe with this Mac 'N Cheese recipe from the Antonella's website. The Roasted Garlic I served last night, over fresh beef tortellini. It was scrumptious! Full of flavour and a perfect match for the beef. This will be back on my table soon.

Of course, you don't just need to heat and pour over cooked pasta. On those nights when you aren't so rushed, these sauces can be used in more involved dishes. The Antonella's website provides a number of suggestions for each flavour.  I'm hoping to use the Roasted Garlic sauce in this recipe for this Chicken Cacciatore.
Aside from the great flavour, the packaging of these sauces is something more to love. Antonella's is presented in light cardboard cartons with pouring spouts. The cartons are made of 100% recyclable materials and include a resealable cap, so if you don't use the whole container you can easily save the remainder for next time. (Because they are preservative-free, please use within 3-5 days of opening and keep refrigerated.)

The environmental footprint of the packaging impresses me - 75% wood fibres from sustainably managed forests (FSC Mixed Sources label has been approved!), and because the cartons are cardboard rather than glass or metal, they can be shipped flat to Lassonde, meaning they can fit in 8 times more cartons than traditional metal cans. Plus the rectangular shape means that even filled, they can transport 33% more product per shipment to stores. Excellent savings on trucks and carbon emissions.

Antonella's sauces are available at Loblaw's, YIG, Zehrs, Valu-Mart, Safeway, Save-On-Foods, Metro and more in the ready-to-serve sauce section. MSRP is $2.49. No refrigeration necessary until opened.
