Stay Safe on Winter Roads with CAA Roadside Assistance

It was a dark and stormy night ...
Actually it was a dark and stormy and cold and icy rush hour. And I was driving home from work with my 2 year old in the back seat after daycare pick-up. Our 45 minute drive took over 5 hours. 5 hours and 20 minutes if memory serves. I do know it was well after 10:30 pm by the time we made it home.

There was no rushing.

I was very worried on that drive. I had no food in the car (that was the absolute last time, by the way), and only a partially full bottle of now frozen water. Cars were off the road everywhere, and so many were slipping and skidding back down the hill on Avenue Rd. I passed the frozen water bottle to Boo so he could have something to suck on at least. And I started making my plans. "Drive carefully and steadily. Don't stop if you can at all help it. The brake is not your friend." And I reminded myself that I had my cell phone and my CAA membership. I knew they'd be busy that night with all the traffic chaos, but I knew I could count on them to come rescue us if we needed.

Luckily, we made it up the hill safely and eventually made our way home. But we could so easily have been among those cars stranded on the side of the road. We passed a lot that night, whether because they skidded into a snow bank, crashed into each other, or simply ran out of gas on the longer than expected drive.

It's important to be prepared for winter roads, including packing a safety kit in your car (blankets, water, snacks, flares, small shovel, rock salt, etc.), switching to winter grade windshield wash fluid and winter tires. But, even the most prepared and experienced drivers can get into difficulty. You can still skid off the road even on snow tires. And even with your safe driving and excellent avoidance skills, the winter weather brings an increase in the possibility of being involved in a collision.
