Kids grow fast. And they need a lot of stuff. Especially when they first arrive. I've long been a fan of thrift store shopping, and so it only made sense that when Little Boo arrived I would look to hand-me-downs and resale outlets for much of his gear and clothing. Toys as well. I'm frugal, and I just can't justify spending tons of money on items that will be worn or used for such a short period of time. Why not purchase gently worn clothing from another mom instead? She wins, I win, the environment wins. Cool, right?
My local resale and consignment shop saw a lot of me as I bought and sold there. Of course, buying resale means a more limited selection of sizes and brands, so I couldn't always find exactly what I was looking for. That's why I was pretty excited to learn about Boomerang Kids. This is a Canadian franchise chain of resale stores, which started in Ottawa and is currently branching out with new locations including Vaughan and Montreal. You can shop in person at one of the brick and mortar locations, or you can shop them all (more selection!) through the Boomerang Kids online store.
Boomerang Kids locations accept and sell kids' clothing from newborn to size 18. The items must be from the last 3 years, and are carefully inspected to ensure cleanliness and quality. The stores also accept maternity clothes, baby equipment, books, DVDs, toys, etc., so there's lots from which to choose.
I visited them online, looking for some brand name clothes for Boo for Spring. (Spring is actually coming, right?) Right from the start of my shopping experience I was impressed. The website is easy to navigate and has excellent filters to narrow your search. To keep me focused I first selected kids' clothing, tops, and then filtered to boy's, size 7. I also had the option to filter by brand (I was looking for Hurley - found it!) and even colour. Condition (new with tags, excellent, gently used) and price range filters are also available.
To let you know how this works - you start your shopping at the broadest level, searching the current inventory at all Boomerang Kids stores. Once you find an item you want to purchase, you will be directed to the specific site for that local store. Remember this is resale, so we're not looking at a warehouse full of multiple items. Each store has their own inventory and each purchase is made directly from that store, where staff go onto the sales floor and pick the items you've selected, them package them up and ship them to your door.
And shipping is super quick! From what I could see from the email confirmations, my items were picked almost in real time (or as soon as the store opened the next day if I shopped at night). It seems this company has an excellent communication system set up with the local stores. And my items arrived within max 48 hours. My first order was placed in the afternoon on a Wednesday and I got it less than 24 hours later on the Thursday. Amazing service. For clothing orders, shipping is a flat rate $10, which I think is a great deal for the speed of service. (Equipment and toys cost extra to ship, naturally.)
Here's our haul!
|2 short-sleeve, 1 long-sleeve, 1 shirt, 1 hoodie, 1 jean jacket, 1 pair of Keen sandals. All for under $100. For the record, the sandals are for me. I wear a size 4 in kids' shoes :)|
|Boo LOVES his jean jacket. He wanted to model it right away and then insisted on wearing it to school the next day. Under his winter coat of course.|
All of the items were in great shape, and only two actually looked like they'd ever been worn. Of course, if you aren't satisfied with your purchase, you can return it within 30 days of the ship date, with tags intact and original packing slip. Returns are processed as a store credit, minus shipping.
To re-cap: easy shopping, easy shipping, great savings, great quality. Shop online or in person, or maybe you're interested in opening your own franchise location? Check them out!
