Clean Water Family Challenge #PGMom #CleanWater

Do you ever stop to think before turning on the tap to grab a drink of water? It's always there, right? And in the vast majority of Canadian communities, it is always drinkable. We are truly lucky to have such an abundance of clean, clear, healthy drinking water so readily available to us.

In fact, a recent survey by P&G and Walmart Canada found that 80 per cent of Canadians take clean drinking water for granted. Not so surprising really. Yet approximately one billion people in the developing world do not have the access we do, and diseases from contaminated water are killing more children
every day than HIV/AIDS and malaria combined. (Source: World Health Organization)  Clean drinking water is a luxury in these areas.

To help combat this global issue, during the month of April, P&G will donate one day of clean drinking water for every P&G product purchased in store at Walmart or online at Walmart.ca. These donations will go to the P&G Children’s Safe Drinking Water (CSDW) Program, which helps provide clean drinking water to communities in the developing world through a water purifying technology developed by P&G. One small P&G purification packet quickly turns 10 litres of dirty, potentially deadly water into clean, drinkable water. Nearly 7 billion litres of clean drinking water have so far been provided by humanitarian organizations across the globe using P&G packets, helping to save an estimated 39,000 lives in more than 75 countries.  P&G’s goal is to save one life every hour by 2020 through the provision of two billion litres of clean water each year. Additionally, from May 1 2014, to March 31, 2015, the purchase of a selection of more than 20 P&G products including Tide, Pampers, Duracell, Dawn, and Pantene at Walmart or Walmart.ca will continue to generate a donation. You can visit walmart.ca/cleanwater for more information.

As a P&G Mom, I'm taking part in a challenge this month to involve my family to do some good deeds to show how small gestures can make a big difference. I truly believe that every little bit helps and I've worked hard to instill a love of giving in my kids. Whether it's purchasing gifts for a charity toy drive or donating outgrown clothes, the boys have been involved in our acts of giving. Boo has now grown much better able to part with old toys and games as he understands that they will go to another child who might otherwise not have many nice things to play with.

There are tons of simple ways we can give back locally, like volunteering at your child's school, or taking your friend's kids for the evening/night so they can go out.  I like to spread a feeling of giving by buying coffee for the person behind me at the Tim Horton's drive-thru, or leaving the remainder on a gift card for the next customer. Even coupons can be the start of a good deed - when I have coupons I can't use, I leave them on the product's shelf at the store. Someone should benefit!

Our kids can get in the spirit by selecting toys and books to donate to a local shelter or charity. For instance, we just donated a big bag of books to the new kindergarten class at Boo's school. The teachers were really happy for the help, and the kids enjoyed the new stories. Maybe your older child can help a neighbour plant their garden or mow their lawn. Why not ask them what ideas they have to help others?

And of course, we can easily give back on a global scale by looking for opportunities to contribute while making purchases we would be making anyway - like buying products at Walmart during the Clean Water campaign.
