Tuesday morning I attended a special Mother's Day Brunch at Toronto's Me to We store. We met there to learn more about the great work Me to We does, in support of Free the Children, and the critical role their logistics partner, DHL, plays in the process. Since 2012, DHL has been providing in-kind shipping services in support of these charities, distributing resources and supplies to Free the Children communities around the world, and shipping Me To We Artisans products to the worldwide market.
To date, DHL Express has helped Me to We ship well over 100,000 Me to We Artisans products, directly connecting over 800 mamas in Kenya to a greater, worldwide market for their traditional beadwork, expanding the reach of the Artisans products and empowering mamas to lift their families and communities out of poverty. In 2013, DHL Express shipped over 70,000 Water Rafiki Friend Chains to North America for Me to We, helping supply over 67,000 people in developing communities around the world with a permanent source of clean water.
This is really an amazing contribution, as removing shipping costs for product greatly increases the amount of revenue that can be invested back into the communities and provided to the mamas as income.

“Having worked side by side with these talented women through Me to We Artisans since 2010, I've seen that every dollar earned by a mother directly impacts her home, her children and her community. However, there is still a large part of the population that doesn't have access to basic needs, like health care. In Kenya, less than 30% of the population has access to basic maternal and child health services,” said Roxanne Joyal, CEO of Me to We, founder of Me to We Artisans. “Through DHL’s generosity this Mother’s Day, consumers can make a direct impact in a mama’s life overseas while at the same time give a gift their mothers can cherish and enjoy.”
The Neno Mom Bracelet features a hand-cast brass pendant inscribed with the word “Mom.” The pendant is hand-knotted on a nylon cord and accented with two brass pieces. The bracelet also features a genuine pearl attached to the pendant with brass wire. The bracelet retails at $24.99 and is available for purchase at www.metowe.com or at the Me to We store located at 233 Carlton Street, Toronto, Ontario. I've been wearing mine every day since our event, and I love it. Looking at the inscribed "Mom" makes me smile every time :)
We were honoured to have a female student from one of the Free the Children high schools, as well as the school principal, come to speak to us on Tuesday. Hearing these first-hand stories of the positive impact of the Artisans project on the women and their families was truly inspiring. These mamas have gained new-found respect within their families, as they have become financial providers. The project has allowed them to send their children to school, buy school supplies for them, build houses for their families, and more. You could hear the pride in the young student's voice as she spoke of her own mama and her work with the Me to We Artisans. These women are very talented beaders, and the products I saw in the Me to We store were just gorgeous. I may have done some shopping before I left ....
