There are certain movies that just really stand the test of time. Some because they are true classics, with incredible writing and acting telling a story for the ages. And some because they just appeal to such a basic standard of humour. You can't help but laugh, whether you're 9 or 90.
"Ghostbusters" is one of those movies for me. I remember seeing it in the theatre when it came out in my early teens, and laughing my butt off with my friends. I've seen it many times over the years, and it still gets me every time. The humour is witty, sarcastic and very quotable. The special effects were amazing for their time, still holding up pretty well today. And, seriously, who doesn't love the Stay Puff Marshmallow Man??
We introduced this classic to Boo a couple of weeks ago. There is a lot of adult humour and sexual suggestion in the film, but most of that went over his head. He was just interested in the ghosts and how goofy Bill Murray's character, Dr. Venkman, was. Bill Murray, Dan Akroyd, Harold Ramis, Rick Moranis - it doesn't get much funnier than that.
If you are looking to take a walk down memory lane and introduce your kids to some classic faves from your past, Netflix Canada has a great selection. Here are just a few ideas to share with the bigger kids:
- The Mighty Ducks
- Honey, I Shrunk the Kids
- The Secret of Nimh
- He-Man and the Masters of the Universe
- The Facts of Life
- The Smurfs
- Diff'rent Strokes
Personally, I never missed an episode of "The Facts of Life" or "Diff'rent Strokes" growing up. I can still sing the whole theme song from Facts. I think it's about time I dive into those as well, and see if Boo will come along for a nostalgic ride with me.
