Yay! I'm a P&G Habitat for Humanity Ambassador #womenbuild

Sept. 2013
Awesome day!
Do you remember last September, when I participated in a Habitat for Humanity Women's Build, and got really muddy and really inspired? Well, I am absolutely thrilled to be able to tell you that, not only will I be participating again this year, I will be doing so as an official #PGMom Habitat for Humanity Ambassador!!! I'm even more thrilled to be sharing this experience with my amazing friend Caroline, from ParentClub.ca (@ParentClub)

Actually, I've been itching to share this news for close to two months now, since I agreed to sign on. I am really looking forward to being involved in this great organisation over the next 5 months, promoting our GTA Women's Builds, encouraging participation, raising funds and awareness, and finally getting on to the build sites and driving some nails. Or cutting some boards, or laying joists, or whatever they assign me to do.

Why is P&G involved? Well, with their strong line of household products, they are a natural match for this organisation that builds homes for families who couldn't otherwise afford the costs of home ownership.

About the Partnership

  • Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit housing organization that mobilizes volunteers and community partners to provide affordable housing and promote home ownership as a means to breaking the cycle of poverty.
  • This three year partnership, which totals $900,000, will see P&G support Habitat’s family home builds throughout the county, on behalf of its Household Needs brands such as Tide, Swiffer and Mr. Clean.
  • This year, the investment will provide assistance in Women Build projects in Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal
  • P&G will offer cleaning kits to Habitat for Humanity affiliates to help ready the newly built homes for move-in once construction is complete, and will provide welcome baskets packed full of household products to each family moving into their new Habitat home.
  • Approximately 350 new builds are expected across Canada in 2014.

This means another 33 GTA families will receive a safe and decent place to live. They invest their own sweat equity into the properties (500 volunteer hours) and pay for the home with a no-interest, no-downpayment mortgage. Since 2009, 56 Habitat GTA Women Build homes have been built by 3,700 volunteers.

Wouldn't you like to get involved?

Both Caroline and I will be forming teams to participate in one day of the GTA Women Build 2014. Details will be forthcoming, and you'll hear me talking it up. A lot! Each participant will have their own fundraising page and will commit to raising a minimum of $500. 100% of funds raised go directly to building the homes. You don't need any construction experience, just a willingness to work hard and get involved with the team. All tools and safety equipment are provided on site.

I really, thoroughly enjoyed my experience last year, in spite of the less than ideal weather. Meeting new friends and being part of an important, meaningful endeavour? Awesome! I hope you'll consider getting involved!

More to come ....
