Did you know that one in five GTA families lives in poverty? In fact, according to Social Planning Toronto, one in three Toronto children under the age of 15 lives in poverty. Many of these children are living in ‘poverty-housing’ – overcrowded and unsafe. The impacts on physical and mental health, as well as on performance in school are profound. Habitat for Humanity GTA aims to break the cycle of poverty for 33 of these families through the 2014 Women Build. #WB2014 has a goal of raising $1 million, while helping to build 33 simple and affordable homes in Scarborough and Brampton.
This Thursday, June 19, we (@ParentClub & I) will be hosting a Twitter chat from 9-10pm EDT, to help spread the word about this year's Women Build and the great work done by Habitat. Volunteer positions are still available for both #WB2014 sites, and we want to encourage you to sign up if you can. We hope our chat will help to answer any questions you might have about getting involved.
And, if you aren't in the GTA, we encourage you to have a look in your own area and see what your local Habitat for Humanity branch has coming up. Both Montreal and Vancouver branches also have specific Women Build events this fall, or you can volunteer for a regular build.
P&G is proud to be the Presenting Sponsor of Women Build 2014 across Canada, and we are proud to be working as ambassadors on their behalf. P&G has generously donated a bundle of home care products from Tide, Swiffer, Mr. Clean, and Febreze, as a grand prize for our Twitter chat. The bundle is valued at approximately $250!! To be eligible to win you must RSVP through the link below, participate in the chat, and be a Canadian resident (void in Quebec). Come join us!
