Jumpstart Pedal for Kids - Ride, Donate, or Enter to Win #JSPedal2014

Both of our boys have taken part in a number of after school activities over the years. Swimming, soccer, and baseball have all had their time. The Teen went on to play Varsity football and rugby in high school. And both developed a real love of karate. We've been lucky to be able to send them to a good karate dojo, with an annual tuition and unlimited classes. The Teen went right through to his black belt, and Boo is determined to get there as well. We love the karate not just for the physical activity and health benefits, but also for the discipline and respect for self and others that is taught. Our boys have learned so much and found real benefits in increased self-esteem and confidence. Plus they have the chance to make new friends.

Children gain so much from participation in sports and other extracurricular activities, but sadly not every child is able to take part. For many families the costs are simply too high, and in fact 1 in 3 Canadian families cannot afford to enroll their kids in organized sports or physical activities. That's where organisations like Canadian Tire's Jumpstart Program come in.

Jumpstart helps get children across Canada into the game. Kids aged 4-18 from financially disadvantaged families are eligible for assistance with costs related to registration, equipment, and even transportation. Applications for funding are through local chapters, with assistance available for a wide variety of activities. To date, Jumpstart has helped over 785,000 kids take part in 76 sports and recreation activities including: hockey, swimming, soccer, basketball, dance, yoga, climbing and martial arts.

In my home province of Newfoundland and Labrador, the Canadian Tire Jumpstart program has helped 34,000 kids during the period 2005-2013. This represents $4.6 Million dollars in investment in our youth and our local communities. Wow. If you'd like more information on how you can access this assistance, please visit the Canadian Tire Jumpstart website.

Funding for Jumpstart comes from government, corporate, and private sources. When you make a donation, 100% of the total goes to the program, and stays in your community. Isn't that great? This month, as part of their overall fundraising drive, Canadian Tire is hosting the Jumpstart Pedal for Kids, a 5-day, 500KM bike ride from Ottawa to Quebec City. This charity ride aims to raise $675,000 for the Jumpstart program. I think it's great that a program designed to encourage and support physical activity is running a fundraiser that is all about getting active!

While they're at it, they've set up a contest where you could win 1 of 10 Schwinn bikes or 1 of 10 Schwinn prize packs. You can enter the Cross-Canada Pedal for Kids Contest online. And if you enter via my link, I'll get to watch my blogger bike travel across the map.

Disclosure: I am taking part in the Canadian Tire Jumpstart Pedal For Kids blog campaign. While I have received compensation as part of my affiliation with this program, the opinions on this blog, as always, remain my own. There is no prize for the blogger with the most entries - just bragging rights and a warm feeling of love :)
