Since When Does Christmas Come in October?

Today is October 8. Thanksgiving is this coming weekend. Hallowe'en is still 23 days away.
But today? This happened.
Seriously? I popped into the Superstore to pick up milk and bacon (and spent close to $200, but that's another story). I decided to check out the Hallowe'en decorations, and I find Christmas. The fall decor is all on sale (convenient as I prepare for Thanksgiving dinner), and Christmas has taken over some major real estate. Already.

This leads me to ask - are people really thinking about the Christmas decorating now? If you are, please forgive me, but it seems way too early to me. We still have two "decorating holidays" between now and then, and plenty of time to be making December plans. (Let's leave aside the discussion of Remembrance Day for now. There are no decorations for that, and I'm focused on the retail angle here.) I just don't feel we need to be rushing things like this.

All in all, I don't understand the retail calendar and how skewed it has become. Yes, you want to buy your winter boots before the first snow. But do you need to buy a snowsuit in July? And wouldn't it be nice to still be able to buy shorts in August? How many parents were scrambling last January, looking for mittens to replace the ones their kids had lost? There were none! The stores were already filled with spring dresses and raincoats.

I don't get it. At this point in the year I have no idea what I do or do not need for Christmas. My stuff is all in boxes, and I have but a vague memory of what got broken or needed replacing after last year. What I do know is that I am not ready to be looking at red and green and trees and sparkly bulbs yet. I want to focus and enjoy the multi-coloured leaves, and the pumpkins and hay bales and ghosts and goblins and all of the October holidays.

Talk to me after American Thanksgiving. My Christmas can start then.

Your turn - what do you think? Am I a Scrooge for wanting the Christmas season to wait? Or do you agree and prefer to wait til at least after Remembrance Day before the festive season kicks in?
