HGG2014: Kinetic Sand {review}

For kids who like to sculpt and mold, and their parents who don't like to clean up the resulting mess - check out Kinetic Sand

How to describe it? It's a modelling compound. It's sand that sticks to itself, but not to you. You can squeeze it and squish it, slice it and dice it. Check out how much detail you can get from these tiny grains when using a mold:
See the scales?
Kinetic Sand is dry to the touch and cleans up super easy, which is a bonus in my view. Plus, it never dries out! If your kids are like mine, containers get left open regularly, and I've thrown out my share of modelling materials in the past. We were testing out the Kinetic Sand Beach Box Set, which comes with 1 pound of sand, 4 plastic molds, and a plastic sandbox tray. I left the sand out in the tray deliberately for 3 weeks, and it is still as good as new.

I also just enjoy the sensation of running the sand through my fingers, squeezing it, feeling it form and re-form. It's quite relaxing, much like squeezing a stress ball, but with the added chance to get creative. Boo uses a stress ball at school, to help him manage his emotions and reactions. This Kinetic Sand is serving the same purpose at home. And since it cleans up so easily we may send a small container in for his desk.
Building sand castles in the living room. How cool is that?

Kinetic Sand is available at Michael's, ToysRUs, Walmart and Target. It comes in sets with molds, or in individual packages of 6 different colours. This is a sensory toy, a creative toy, and it helps to develop fine motor skills. A great gift for kids of all ages! (Once they're beyond putting everything in their mouth, of course.)
