Lucasfilm's "Strange Magic" {Review}

Strange Magic, an animated film from Lucasfilm Ltd., was released on DVD and Digital on May 19. Strange Magic is a madcap fairy tale musical inspired by “A Midsummer Night's Dream.” Popular songs from the past six decades help tell the tale of a colorful cast of goblins, elves, fairies and imps, and their hilarious misadventures sparked by the battle over a powerful potion.
"Everyone deserves to be loved" is the tagline for this family film, which is absolutely true and a great message delivered by the story. Two enemy kingdoms, lost love, found love, a nasty prince, fighting and adventure all make for a good romp through fairy land. But this was not my favourite movie, and neither was it Boo's.

I think we were turned off by the musical aspect. There are fabulous, classic songs included, sung by the voice cast, but musicals just aren't our thing. Which doesn't mean they aren't yours. The animation is stunning. The story is good, if predictable. (It's a kid's movie so that doesn't bother me!) And there's an important lesson learned. For us it got a 2.5/5.  If you enjoy musicals, you'll rate it much higher though. Here's a clip to give you a taste so you can judge for yourself:

The DVD includes the following Bonus Materials:
"Magical Mash-Up" - outtakes, tests and melodies
"Creating the Magic" - meet the cast & filmmakers
