From celebrated authors Amy Hempel and Jill Ciment, writing as A.J. Rich, a smart, thrilling, sexy, and emotionally riveting novel of psychological suspense about an accomplished woman involved with a man who proves to be an imposter.
Morgan Russell, thirty, comes home to her apartment in Brooklyn to a gruesome scene: her fiancé Bennett brutally killed, and her dogs covered in blood. Distraught and bewildered, Morgan’s grieving process is interrupted when she learns the authorities have no records of her fiancé. After doing some investigating of her own, Morgan discovers that Bennett was not the man he said he was, and that the grisly murder at her apartment may just have been the start.
In the vein of Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn and Before I Go To Sleep by S.J. Watson, The Hand That Feeds You is a dark novel of psychological suspense that will leave you wondering how well you really know the ones you love.
The Hand That Feeds You delivers on suspense and thrills, with great writing and well-developed characters. I found myself drawn in easily and really caring about the outcomes. The story is compelling, and I came to a couple of different "conclusions" before actually figuring out the whodunit, which I think is the hallmark of a great mystery.
But the book isn't perfect. Morgan very quickly accepts the idea that her dogs killed her fiance, and even though two were recently rescued pit bulls, whom she didn't know all that well, her easy belief didn't sit right. I won't tell you if they were or were not involved, but a dog lover would not give up to the evidence that easily. And as the book progresses a few glaring oversights of the police investigation become apparent. Oversights that are hard to swallow. So although I really enjoyed this novel, I still found myself annoyed at these plot flaws.
I think this would be a great summer read for the cottage, backyard or beach. Definitely entertaining, and at the same time will have you thinking and wondering and trying to figure out who is who, who is lying, and who is just nuts.
The Hand That Feeds You is set to release on July 7, 2015.
