There is perhaps no dish more associated with Canada than poutine. Born in Quebec, it has become a huge food trend across the country, with poutine specialty shops popping up all over. And it has grown to inspire so many new recipe combinations. No longer just the standard fries with gravy and cheese curds, you will find poutine with various meats, different cheeses, and any sauce you can imagine. Heck, I even make my own Buffalo Chicken Poutine.
But there's a new kid on the block now, and this kid too is born in Quebec. St. Hubert has introduced a bite-sized, finger friendly version of the classic poutine, ready in time for your holiday entertaining.
These little bundles of yum feature a crispy potato coating with real mozzarella and cheddar cheese plus St-Hubert’s famous poutine sauce wrapped inside. So you can now get your cheesy poutine fix with no fork and no mess. These would be a great addition to your next appetizer tray - just add some toothpicks and you're good to go.
Super easy to prepare, simply toss in a 450 degree oven for about 8 minutes, or deep fry for 2 minutes at 350 degrees. They cook from frozen so have some on hand to pull out for surprise guests. Or plan to serve them at a holiday cocktail party along with other passed appies. Your guests will be so surprised!
We enjoyed these just as a family while I was preparing dinner on a Saturday evening. A glass of wine and some nibblies before our family meal - that's my kind of "appy hour."
What was our verdict? These are definitely tasty and would work well as a passed appetizer, a quick side for a casual, kid-friendly meal, or as an after school snack. There's lots of cheese inside, so these are quite satisfying. One suggestion I would make - I'd like a bit more poutine sauce in the mix, but then again, I love the sauce! I suspect the amount of sauce was kept down to avoid drippy messes on party dresses, but a touch more would really amp up the flavour. Would I buy this product? Yes. I'm planning on getting some for a brunch I'm having with my girlfriends in a couple of weeks. They are poutine fans, and I want to give them a little unexpected treat.
