On this Giving Tuesday, I want to share one of my favourite ideas for gifts that give back. Because there are those of us who have lots. Lots of family. Lots of food. Lots of comfort. Lots of health. And there are those who do not. And when it comes to helping children who are lacking in that last one and facing serious illnesses, I love the work done by The Starlight Foundation.
The Starlight Foundation has programs for children both in and out of hospital, granting wishes, providing entertainment, events and comfort to help make life a little brighter for these kids and their families. All those good works of course require a solid fundraising base, and Starlight has many ways you can help. At the holidays they make it even easier, with their adorable Starlight Bears.
Meet Quinn, the 2015 Starlight Bear.
Each year's bear is designed by a special Starlight child, and in 2015 that child is Desiray, a 7 year old girl living with cancer. She was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in 2013, and has spent the last 2 years undergoing chemotherapy and other treatments. Quinn was inspired by Desiray's love for the colour turquoise, soft cuddly stuffies and all things sparkly. The turquoise cape represents Desiray's strength, bravery and special super powers that she uses every day to make our world a brighter place. Quinn has a very special birthday on August 25th, selected to mark Desiray's last scheduled treatment for cancer!
You can pick up your own Starlight Bear at your local ToysRUs, or online at ToysRUs.ca, for $19.99. Quinn is truly one of the softest and cuddliest bears I've met, and would make a wonderful gift for a child on your list. At the same time, your purchase will help a child like Desiray, as the proceeds go directly to the work of Starlight Canada.
In a new partnership this year, Bouclair is offering Oscar the Nutcracker for sale at $2 each. All proceeds from these sales will go to support Starlight. And, in addition to getting a cute nutcracker you can decorate as you like, if you take a creative picture of the little guy and post it to Instagram or Facebook (be sure to include #OscartheNutcracker and tag @Bouclair), you could win one of the weekly prizes of $50 Bouclair gift cards or the grand prize of a $1000 Bouclair gift card. I think I'd like to see a little army of these guys along my mantel.
I'll have more gifts that give back ideas coming soon. Check back for other great ways you can help others while doing the gift shopping you'd do anyway.
