Waterloo Brewing Co. Spiced Dunkel {Review}

Do you find your beverage of choice changes with the season? I know it does for me. In the summer I lean towards gin & tonic, or a nice, light wheat beer. As the weather cools I move to India pale ales, and eventually to rum & coke or a hearty stout. And for the Christmas season I like something a little special. I love when the winter beers start to hit the shelves!

This year the Waterloo Brewing Co. has come out with a delicious and festive small-batch brew for the holidays - a Spiced Dunkel.  A dunkel is a traditional, German, dark lager, with a full body and malty flavour.  This version is very true to form, with the wonderful addition of seasonal spices to add a warmth for winter drinking.

Waterloo's Spiced Dunkel is flavoured with a blend of cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and cloves - perfect Christmas spices.  It has a very slight hops bitterness, and is really "drinkable" - smooth and thirst-quenching.  Plus, the deep mahogany colour is lovely.  This would be a great gift for the beer lover on your list, or an excellent alternative to bringing a bottle of red as a hostess gift for your next holiday party invite.

Waterloo recommends the following food pairings - big, intense dishes such as roast beef or grilled or roasted lamb. And for dessert, spiced pumpkin pie with ice cream.

For the record, I just enjoyed this brew on its own, in a lager glass, with a great movie. And there might have been some holiday cookies involved as well.

You can purchase the Waterloo Spiced Dunkel at the LCBO and direct from the Brick Brewery in Kitchener.
