5 Summer Must-Haves

Part and parcel with this blogging gig, I attend a good number of media events where new and innovative products are introduced. I get to try new things all the time, sometimes with unexpected items even showing up randomly at my door. It's fun and informative. Some of these products I like better than others, and, especially at the larger showcase events, sometimes the products just aren't relevant to me. So I don't necessarily share all of them here; I pick and choose the ones I think you'll like best, or that I've totally fallen for.

On that note, here are five of my top picks for summer essentials. These are all products I've encountered over recent months that I believe you'll love, and that will each add something special to your summer fun. Let me know what you think!

Gotta Have -

A Great Beach Towel

I actually first met this towel at Boo's old swim school, where they were selling these amazing micro-fibre towels, emblazoned with their logo. A friend of ours bought them for his daughters when they forgot their towels at home, and they were impressive. TaLii towels are super lightweight and compact. They fold 75% thinner, hold 500% as much water, and dry 70% faster than a regular terry towel. And both the bath sheets and bath towels come equipped with an elastic strap to keep it nicely bundled. Plus, the TaLii towels come in a fantastic variety of colours and can be personalised with custom embroidery. So easy to pack for a day at the beach, and super absorbent for quickly drying off before getting back in the car. Add an embroidered name for identification and you have the perfect towel to send off to camp with your kids. There are a variety of sizes, but I like either the bath sheet (71x43 inches - $30) or bath towel (51x31.5 inches - $22.50) for the beach or pool. Buy online at

Sun Protection You Can Trust

First off, a sunscreen has to be effective in blocking both UVA and UVB rays. For me, I also want ease of application, no sticky or greasy feel, and nothing that will harm my or my child's skin (or health in general). Boo Bamboo Natural Sunscreen is a natural product, employing a proprietary zinc oxide formula. It's non-whitening, non-greasy, fast-absorbing, and Paraben and DEA free, What else do I love? It's a solid SPF 40 and contains ingredients like bamboo extract, aloe vera, lavender oil to soothe, protect and moisturise your skin. Safe for both kids (6 months+) and adults, Boo Bamboo is available in both cream and spray formats. I like the spray, which is non-aerosol and can spray in any direction, even upside down. I tested it out at a recent event and it goes on so light and easy you won't even realise you're wearing it. The spray is available in two sizes, including a 50g can that is perfect for your purse and quick re-applications. Find Boo Bamboo Natural Sunscreen at Loblaws, Whole Foods, Rexall, and at Made in Canada.

An Inspiring Topper

This little gem is a real powerhouse, with 12 different suggested ways to wear. Tillie is a headband, bandana, scrunchie, beanie, scarf, and more. Whether you are looking to protect your head in the hot sun, soak up some sweat on your run (or during your hot flash), having a bad hair day, or just wanting to accessorize your look, Tillie has you covered. (Pun intended.) Tillie is a seamless, tubular 100% microfibre polyester fabric that provides UV protection, wicks moisture, and dries fast. It is elastic, without stretching out of shape, which is why it can be worn so many ways. They even suggest you can wear it as a tube top, but I'm a bit too big for that myself so I haven't tried it out :)

What's even more special about the Tillie line is its inspirational aspect. Each design has its own special message. Mine says "She believed she could, so she did." Choose from "I go this," "When life hands you lemons, make a gin and tonic," "Namaste Just Breathe," and more. Order online at $23.00 each. Made in Canada.

One Drink Bottle to Rule Them All

We know we need to stay hydrated in the hot weather, so a water bottle is a must, in my opinion. And I have tons of them. I also have tons of travel mugs in different materials for different drinks, hot and cold. What if we could accomplish all that variety in just one bottle? Enter the MultiFlask. Why I love this? Versatility. And more room in my cupboard. The MultiFlask 6-in-1 system gives options for hot drinks, with or without steeping, cold drinks, with or without an inner liner, infusing cold drinks, and mixing powdered drinks (like your protein shake).

Boo has a thing for cucumber water. Slice up some cucumber, place it in the infuser, add cold water, and he has a delicious and hydrating drink he will happily consume. Berries and mint often go in mine. Yum! Or if I want to grab a tea on the run I can add my tea leaves to the filter, pop it into the system, pour the boiling water in, and presto! And my hand is protected from the heat because of the dual chamber set-up. The outer shell is BPA/BPS and Pthalate-free Tritan polymer. Inners are either glass or Tritan. The glass inner is used for the hot beverages, which means better flavour (I cannot drink my tea from stainless or plastic), without the risk of breakage. You can purchase the MultiFlask online, or find a local retailer. $44.99.

Silky Legs

OK, so this one is not new, and this is certainly not the first time I've sung its praises, but I couldn't do a summer "must have" list without including my favourite way to de-fur my legs. Nair has been providing me with a cost-effective and simple solution, with longer-lasting results than shaving, for a very long time. Whether you prefer the cream depilatory or are ready to grab the wax strips or wax tubs, Nair has a product for you. The wax strips are a great entry to waxing and really easy to use. Or try the Cire Divine Argan Oil with Pain Reducer. Its special formula is designed to adhere perfectly to the hair, and less to the skin. Results last up to 4 weeks!

So, what do you think? Is there anything you would add?  Popsicles? Yeah. A big box of popsicles in the freezer is coming in as the 6th must-have for summer. I have those on hand as well!
