Join Me As I #WalkForSickKids On September 24!

Perhaps this one can also be filed under the heading of "pushing beyond my limits." As much as I'd like to be athletic, or at least fit, I am not. I once did a 5K fundraising walk, many moons ago, and actually had no trouble; it was really enjoyable. But this year I've signed on as an Ambassador for The Canaccord Genuity Great Camp Adventure Walk in support of the Hospital for Sick Children. And that means that I'll be taking on a 20K walk, and Boo will be joining me.

Does a 20K walk sound daunting? It shouldn't really. This walk is designed with families in mind and is suitable for all ages and abilities. The event is camp-themed, and there's a new campsite every 2.5 km, so you and your crew can take a break, get some refreshments, play some games, meet other families, or just give your feet a little rub. Each campsite has restroom facilities and first aid as well.

If you don't want to walk the full 20K, that's fine too. The Great Camp Adventure Walk is a "Challenge by Choice" event, and you can choose to walk 5K, 10K, 15K, or the full 20K - whatever works best for you! You'll find a shuttle service available at each campsite to get you back to Main Camp when you're done. And however far you trek, you'll be treated to a lovely stroll/hike/power walk through some of Toronto's most interesting neighbourhoods. The route is different every year, but always starts and ends at historic Fort York in downtown Toronto, at 100 Garrison Road (Main Camp). You can see maps from the past 3 years of this event on the website.

Now, aside from the personal benefits I'll receive from this walk - exercise, fresh air, meeting new people, bonding with my boy - I'm very excited to be helping raise funds to benefit the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids). We are a SickKids family, as are so many of my friends, and we know first hand the great work they do there. Funds raised from The Great Camp Adventure Walk go to support patient care, research discoveries, knowledge sharing among medical professionals and the hospital’s most urgent needs. SickKids is the leading children's hospital in Canada, and houses the largest hospital-based child heath research unit in the country. Did you know they treat over 100,000 patients each year? They can't do this important, life-saving work without our help.

So, what are you doing on September 24? No plans? You can join me and Boo at the Great Camp Adventure Walk. Register today at

Oh! I should also mention - well-behaved, healthy dogs are also welcome, so you can bring your best furry buddy along too! PetSmart will be providing "Pup Stops" at each campsite, with water, doggie treats, and those oh-so-necessary waste bags. We are debating bringing Maxi, but she's pretty lazy so I'm not sure she'd make it to the end. We'll see.
