I am certainly not the best role model for housecleaning, although at this time of year I do make an effort to tackle some of those larger tasks that don't get done every day. After all, with Mother Nature brightening up and putting on her best, colourful show outside, it's nice to mirror that freshness inside our homes as well. Preparing my office for a new coat of paint really drove home the reality that my baseboards and windows need attention. Maybe even a good scouring. So that's where a lot of my attention will be going.
One tip I can offer, to help make your spring cleaning as painless as possible - minimise the number of products you have to use. While there are plenty of excellent products out there designed for specific purposes, there are also excellent multi-purpose cleaners that allow you to cover many surfaces and types of dirt without carting around a half-dozen containers. Simplify with a product like Pine-Sol Multi-Surface Cleaner, and you'll have one product for your floors, baseboards, walls, counters, toilets, and more.
Pros of a multi-surface cleaner are many, including cost savings (one product) and efficiency. Dilute in a bucket of hot water, grab your gloves and a couple of rags and you're good to go. Cleaning a toilet? Pour some in full strength. Mopping floors? Use a stronger solution for tougher dirt. And of course using one product throughout your house will leave your house with a unified scent throughout.
Pine-Sol comes in a variety of scents to suit your preferences, and they've just introduced a new one to bring a blast of spring to your home. Spring Blossom scent is a wonderful floral, with notes of jasmine, magnolia and orange blossom. It doesn't smell like "cleaner," but like a lovely room freshener. Or bubble bath. Honestly, it smells really nice. Just don't be fooled by its pretty aroma; it retains the cleaning and grease-cutting power you expect from Pine-Sol.
There are many places this is needed in my house right now, but I started by giving this a try on the wall going up the stairs to our bedrooms. The wall without a hand rail is covered in dirty, greasy, boy hand stains.
This picture doesn't really do it justice, as the lighting wasn't great, but I hope you can see that clear line between dirty and clean. No scrubbing, just a light wipe took off all the oily hand yuck. There were a few lines that looked like pencil (why?!) that didn't come off immediately and needed a little more elbow grease. Of course, if you are using this, or any product, on painted surfaces, test it out on a small patch first to make sure your paint can withstand the cleaning power and any needed scrubbing. Mine did fine.
Pine-Sol is available nationally at grocery and discount retailers. MSRP for a 1.41L container is $4.49. Pine-Sol contains no ammonia or phosphorus, and is packaged in recyclable PET plastic bottles. Additional scents include Original Lavender Clean, Mandarin Sunrise, Lemon Fresh and Sparkling Wave.
