Your Daily Cute Fix: Kitty Cam

Not the Kattarshians, but these little guys are pretty cute too.
I have a new addiction, and other than being a time suck, it's a perfectly healthy one. In fact, it makes me smile and brings happiness to my heart, and we all know there are excellent health benefits from a positive and joyous outlook on life!  So I have no intention of beating this particular addiction any time soon.

Meet - The Kattarshians.

You read that right. It's even a cute name. "Keeping Up with the Kattarshians" is a brilliant and adorable live cam from Iceland. Three Go-Pro cameras provide a 24/7 live feed of kittens living in a specially designed and decorated doll house. There's 2 sets of bunk beds, lots of nooks and crannies, things to climb, and things to scratch. As I watch this morning, they have a disco ball throwing lights around for the kittens to chase. Staff and volunteers keep things fresh for the kittens with new toys on a regular basis. The first set of little darlings were a family of 4 orphans. They stayed, played, and entertained until they were adopted out, and then a new group of kittens moved in. And so it will continue.

The project is run by the Icelandic Cat Protection Society, with full knowledge and approval of the Icelandic Food And Veterinary Authority, the Animal Welfare Officer and the Expert Veterinarian and Animal Welfare Officer. So everything is above board and the kittens are very well looked after. Two to three times each day the cameras shut down so staff and volunteers can clean kitty litter, refresh food and water, and enjoy some play time with the kittens.

Because the kittens get ample opportunity for human interaction, they will be well-socialised and ready when they are adopted out to loving homes.

Honestly, I think this is such a smart idea. Aside from the pleasure I get from watching the kittens play and rough house with each other (and that truly is a nice stress reliever in a busy day), this live cam is helping to spread the word that there are so many cats and kittens in shelters, waiting for their forever homes. Even for those who are not in a position to adopt one of the kittens from the doll house (like, anyone not in Iceland), I hope this live cam serves to increase awareness.

The project also has a Facebook page - www.facebook.com/kattarshians where they share behind the scenes photos, plus more information and pictures of the doll house kittens, plus kitten and cat care information in general.

If you love cats, or if you just need a smile, head over and see what these babies are up to!
