SIr Kaye The Boy Knight: The Eldridge Conspiracy {book review}

The Eldridge Conspiracy (affiliate link) is the latest offering from award-winning children's author, Don Winn, the fourth and final installment in his chapter book series Sir Kaye the Boy Knight. This volume tells the tale of the biggest adventure yet for 12 year-old Sir Kaye Balfour, and his friends Reggie and Beau. The boys must travel to the Kingdom of Eldridge to save the lives of both the king, and Kaye's father, who acts as an ambassador there. Along the way they face many dangers at the hands of an evil baron, the perpetrator of the murderous plot, who sends his henchmen on a hunt to capture the boys before they ruin his plans.

I initially passed this along to Boo to read and review, but then picked it up myself. He was hesitant to dive into book 4 without having read books 1-3. But he needn't have worried. This book stands well on its own, and you don't have to have read the previous volumes to understand the story or the environment. In the few places where context or a bit of history are required, the author skillfully and briefly fills you in.

This is a book for middle-aged readers, but I quite enjoyed it myself. The writing is strong, and Winn does not "talk down" to his young readers. I found the story compelling, with enough twists, turns, and suspense to keep any tween boy (or his mom) entertained. There is some mystery, some danger, many laughs, and a great message about both friendship and family. As Kaye faces some serious doubts about his worth as a knight, we also receive an important lesson about individual strengths and differences. We all have something special to offer.

I would recommend this book for the 9-12 age range. Enjoy!
