Disney/Pixar's "Coco" in Theatres November 22

I'm always excited to see a new Disney/Pixar offering, and this one was no exception. "Coco" presents the story of a young boy, Miguel, with a deep love of music, being raised in a family who has banned all music for generations. He dreams of following in the footsteps of his idol, Ernesto de la Cruz, the most famous musician in the history of Mexico.

“When Miguel unearths a secret from his family’s past - a connection to Ernesto de la Cruz - he rushes to share the news with his family, thinking it will clear the way for him to be a musician,” says screenwriter Matthew Aldrich. “To his surprise, it only makes matters worse.”

The action in "Coco" takes place on Dia de los Muertos, and sees Miguel being transported to the Land of the Dead. There he meets members of his departed family, along with a skeleton named Hector, a bit of a misfit. Miguel and Hector embark on a music-filled adventure to learn the truth behind his family's secret and the ban on music. This is supported by vibrant and colourful animation and a fair bit of action.

"Coco" is a wonderful story about the importance of family, honouring your ancestors, and following your dreams. It has twists & turns, surprises, great music, and tons of laughs. I was completely drawn in to this one, and I found myself having some very strong feelings about certain characters, which did develop and change as the story unfolded. By the end, I was crying my eyes out. Bring tissues.

"Coco" is a wonderful film to enjoy with your own family, and it may even prompt you to share some stories of your grandparents and great-parents with your kids. It is rated PG, for thematic elements (death and the afterlife, I guess - it does have sad moments), but I think it would be great for all ages.

Disclosure: I received complimentary press access to a screening of this film, for myself and a guest. No financial compensation was received. All opinions on this blog, as always, remain my own or those of my family.
